Medicines management in the UK is governed strictly by the NMC Standards for Medicines Management and local NHS trust protocols. Safe drug administration is the core duty of any registered nurse, and mistakes can carry severe legal and professional consequences.
1. The Bedside Double-Check Standard
For high-risk medications (such as IV infusions, insulin, and controlled drugs), you must perform a rigorous bedside double-check with another registered nurse. Both professionals must independently verify the patient's identity, the prescription chart validity, the drug formulation, calculation math, and expiration dates.
2. Safe Storage of Controlled Drugs (CDs)
Controlled drugs must be stored under double-lock conditions inside a designated CD cupboard. Every single entry, administration, and disposal of a controlled drug must be logged and signed by two qualified nurses inside the official paper or digital CD register book.
