Reviewing high-frequency questions is the fastest way to build exam familiarity. Here, we analyze the core concepts behind the 50 most common situational, clinical, and calculation questions that appear on the NMC Test of Competence.

1. High-Frequency Numeracy Scenarios

Expect at least 5 questions on liquid drug dosages and 3 questions on IV drip rates (drops/minute). The most common trap is converting units incorrectly (e.g. failing to convert grams to milligrams before running the equation).

2. Safety-Critical Situational Scenarios

The exam frequently features scenarios testing your professional response to errors. For example: *'You observe a colleague administer the wrong medication. What is your immediate action?'* The correct NHS answer is always to check the patient's vitals first, report the error immediately to the ward sister, and act transparently under the Duty of Candour.

3. Clinical Escalation Questions

Calculate physiological vitals using the NEWS2 score and know the exact escalation trigger thresholds (e.g. registering a single red score of 3 requires urgent clinician review).
