Cracking the NMC Code: How 4 Key Values Dictate Your CBT Answers

Published: July 5, 2024 | By: cbtprep.co.uk

Many experienced international nurses fail the NMC CBT Part B because they answer situational questions based on what they would do in their home countries, rather than what is legally expected in the UK. The secret key to unlocking every situational judgment question is The NMC Code.

The 4 Key Pillars of the NMC Code

Every professional scenario on the CBT is written to test your adherence to the four key themes of the Code. When you are stuck between two realistic options, ask yourself which answer aligns best with these values:

1. Prioritise People

You must treat patients with dignity, respect their decisions, and advocate for their safety above all else. In the CBT, the correct answer will always prioritize the patient's immediate physical and emotional safety over hospital administration or staffing shortages.

2. Practise Effectively

Always deliver care based on the best available evidence. If a question presents you with an outdated clinical practice or a non-standard method, the correct answer is always to follow the official evidence-based guidelines and NHS local policy.

3. Preserve Safety

You must raise concerns immediately if you believe patient safety is compromised. This includes calling out unsafe practices by colleagues, reporting medication errors immediately, and refusing to perform tasks outside your scope of practice. Silence or 'waiting to see' is always the wrong answer on the CBT.

4. Promote Professionalism and Trust

Maintain professional boundaries and represent the nursing profession with integrity. The Duty of Candour is a vital part of this theme—be open, honest, and apologetic with patients whenever anything goes wrong.
