Under the NMC Test of Competence blueprint, certain questions are flagged as 'Safety Critical'. If you make a mistake in these critical scenarios, you fail the entire exam. Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is the most common safety-critical area.
1. Standard vs. Transmission-Based Precautions
You must know when to apply standard precautions (hand hygiene, gloves, apron for body fluids) versus transmission-based precautions. For airborne pathogens like tuberculosis or COVID-19, you must choose options with a negative-pressure isolation room and an FFP3 respirator mask.
2. The Five Moments for Hand Hygiene
The WHO Five Moments are heavily tested: (1) before touching a patient, (2) before clean/aseptic procedures, (3) after body fluid exposure risk, (4) after touching a patient, and (5) after touching patient surroundings. Learn these moments inside out.
3. Safe Disposal of Sharps
Never re-cap a needle! Sharps disposal is a major safety-critical topic. Always choose the option to dispose of the needle immediately at the point of use into a designated, color-coded sharps container. It is a critical failure to carry a used needle across a ward.
