The Numeracy section of the NMC CBT is often the biggest source of anxiety for international nurses. But here is the secret: you don't need a math degree to pass. You just need to master three specific formulas.
1. The Universal Drug Calculation
The most common question you will face is calculating oral or IV medication doses. Always use the formula: (What you want / What you have) × Volume. Memorize this and apply it systematically to every dosage question.
2. IV Drip Rates
You must know how to calculate drops per minute (dpm). The formula is: (Volume in mL × Drop Factor) / Time in minutes. Pay close attention to whether the question asks for hours or minutes, as this is a common trap!
3. Weight-Based Dosing
Especially common in the RNC (Child) exam, weight-based dosing requires two steps: first, multiply the dose by the patient's weight in kg, then apply the universal drug calculation. Never skip the first step.
