Part B Pharmacology: Mastering Drug Dosage & Dilution Questions

Published: June 24, 2024 | By: cbtprep.co.uk

Pharmacology and drug calculations are a core pillar of the NMC CBT Part B exam. A solid grasp of liquid dosages, infusions, and metric conversions is essential to secure your UK registration.

1. Metric Unit Conversions

Never skip unit conversion! Many candidates fail because they mix up milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg). Always remember: 1 gram (g) = 1,000 milligrams (mg) = 1,000,000 micrograms (mcg). Convert everything to the same unit before calculating.

2. Liquid Medication Dilutions

For liquid medications, you must find the concentration. For example, if you need 250mg of a drug and have 500mg/5mL, use: (Want / Have) × Volume = (250 / 500) × 5 = 2.5 mL. Be systematic and always write down your steps.

3. IV Drop Rates & Flow Rates

You will face questions asking for flow rates in mL/hour. Remember: Total Volume (mL) / Total Time (hours) = mL/hour. If the question asks for drops per minute (dpm), multiply the flow rate by the drop factor and divide by 60.
