NMC CBT Safeguarding Scenarios: 3 Crucial Principles

Published: June 8, 2024 | By: cbtprep.co.uk

In the NMC CBT, safeguarding questions are classified as 'safety critical'. This means getting them wrong can result in an automatic fail. Let's explore the essential protocols you must memorize.

1. Recognizing Abuse and Neglect

The first step in safeguarding is accurate identification. You must understand the different types of abuse: physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and institutional. Look out for indicators such as unexplained bruises, sudden changes in behavior, or unkept living conditions in community nursing scenarios.

2. The Duty to Report

In the UK, you have a professional duty to report any safeguarding concerns immediately. The correct answer in your exam will always prioritize the safety of the individual over the reputation of colleagues or the trust.

3. Escalation Pathways

Know the escalation chain. If you suspect abuse, your first step is to document your observations accurately and report to your direct line manager or the designated safeguarding lead. Never try to investigate the abuse yourself.
